Our Local Work

In the United States, Bridge of Life focuses on early detection and prevention of kidney and chronic disease through community-based screenings. While healthcare access exists, millions of people are still living with undiagnosed conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, often without knowing it until it has already progressed. Our work meets people where they are, creating simple, accessible opportunities to understand their health earlier and take action.

We partner with local organizations, including community organizations and YMCAs, to bring free health screenings directly into communities. These events are designed to be quick, easy, and welcoming: no insurance required, no barriers to participation. Participants move through a streamlined process that includes vital signs, urine and blood testing, and real-time results. But the most important part isn’t the test, it’s the conversation that follows. Individuals can sit down with a provider, understand what their numbers mean, and learn what steps to take next.

We support community partners in outreach and engagement, provide education on managing risk factors like hypertension and diabetes, and help connect participants to local resources for follow-up care. Volunteers play a critical role in this effort, from clinicians who guide conversations to community members who create a supportive and welcoming environment.

“On behalf of myself as a nephrologist, and Dr. Rojas, vascular surgeon, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for this incredible opportunity. Being welcomed here, learning from your team, and sharing this experience has been truly inspiring for both of us and for the work we represent in Guatemala.

This experience has allowed us to see the management of vascular access from a broader and more integrated perspective. We have learned that success does not depend on a single specialty, but on collaboration, from patient evaluation and planning, to interventional procedures, surgery, and long-term follow-up. Watching how each step connects to improve patient outcomes has been one of the most valuable lessons for us.

From the nephrology perspective, we have strengthened our understanding of comprehensive patient management and the importance of preserving vascular access through timely intervention. From the surgical perspective, Dr. Rojas has reinforced the value of creating durable access and working closely with nephrology and interventional teams to ensure long-term success for our patients.

Together, we return home with a shared vision: to improve the care of patients with kidney disease by reducing catheter dependence, increasing functional fistulas, and promoting a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. We are committed to sharing what we have learned with our colleagues, training our teams, and building sustainable programs that will continue to grow over time.

Most importantly, we leave with gratitude, not only for the knowledge you have shared, but for the spirit of collaboration and friendship you have shown us. Opportunities like this remind us that when we work together across countries and specialties, we can truly change lives.

Thank you for your generosity, your guidance, and for believing in our mission to improve care for patients in Guatemala.”
