AV Fistula Intervention Training

Bridge of Life’s AV fistula intervention project is focused on expanding access to safe, sustainable dialysis care by strengthening local surgical capacity in underserved regions. Through this initiative, we partner with Roosvelt Hospital, General San Juan De Dios and Villa Nueva Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and nephrology teams to train surgeons in the creation and management of arteriovenous (AV) fistulas, the gold standard for vascular access in hemodialysis. The program combines hands on surgical training, clinical education, and ongoing mentorship to ensure long-term success beyond the initial intervention. This project will bring Dr. Dirk Hentschel, an interventional nephrologist, to Guatemala to provide hands-on training in the interventions needed to assess, maintain, and salvage fistulas. By building skills across the full continuum of care, we’re helping ensure that fistulas are not only placed, but that they last. The inclusion of interventional nephrology is a game changer. Local providers are gaining practical experience in evaluating fistula function, identifying complications early, and performing minimally invasive procedures to restore access. This reduces reliance on catheters and improving long-term outcomes. By bringing together surgical and interventional training to public hospitals in Guatemala, this project is not just placing fistulas. Rather, we’re building the skills and systems to sustain this work long after we leave.
