Overview of Healthcare Needs
In Vietnam, The Global Burden of Disease 2015 study ranks chronic kidney disease (CKD) as the tenth leading cause of death in the country. Hemodialysis is a popular modality for CKD treatment in Vietnam, but the risk of blood-borne factors is exacerbated by non-compliant behaviors in hemodialysis patients. One study found that 99 percent of patients reused dialyzers which could lead to higher rates of hepatitis. Additionally, many regions in Vietnam, especially more rural areas, do not have available dialysis clinics, which can lead to lack of treatment and ultimately death for many patients.
