Overview of Healthcare Needs
The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not well studied in African populations. Anecdotal evidence by physicians suggests that the prevalence of CKD in Senegal has been increasing at an alarming rate over the last two decades, particularly in urban populations, but few studies have been conducted to truly assess the prevalence. One community – based cross sectional survey conducted in northern Senegal found that CKD is frequent among the adult population living in this region, and that the main associated factors are hypertension and age. Additionally, many regions in Senegal, especially more rural areas, do not have available dialysis clinics, which can lead to lack of treatment and ultimately death for many patients.
