Overview of Healthcare Needs
In the Philippines, The Global Burden of Disease 2015 study ranks chronic kidney disease (CKD) as the fifth leading cause of death in the country. The prevalence of CKD in the Philippines has been steadily rising over the last decade. In 2003, the Department of Health reported that the prevalence of CKD amongst adult Filipinos was only 2.6 percent. But a study published in 2013 found that CKD affected 1 in 10 adult Filipinos. Many regions in the Philippines, especially more rural areas, do not have available dialysis clinics, which can lead to lack of treatment and ultimately death for many patients.
