Overview of Healthcare Needs
Nicaragua provides both private and public healthcare institutions for its citizens. The Nicaraguan government guarantees universal free healthcare for its citizens, however, the current delivery model and the unequal distribution of resources and medical personnel leads to a persistent lack of access and quality care for many. The government has adopted a decentralized model that emphasizes community-based preventative and primary medical care to address the lack of access to medical services. However, there are still many challenges to providing adequate quality care. It is believed a large number of deaths and illnesses in Nicaragua can be avoided by increased access to care and basic health and nutritional education.
